Carry-On (2024)

Sleep schedule is all jacked, none of my usual ‘go-to’ rituals are working for slumber. I thought “I’ll just , you know, turn on Netflix and hope to fall asleep…”

24 hours and counting….

Yeah, that didn’t work.

I got a new Christmas movie out of it, so… bonus?

Given I’m unemployed, getting a Christmas bonus out of nowhere is… I’m gonna haz a sad for the third time today real quick.

OK.

Still here?

Back to the reason you’re here:

Carry-On (2024) with Taron Egerton, Jason Bateman, Sofia Carson, Danielle Deadwyler, & Dean Norris

If you have Netflix, go watch ‘Carry-On’ as soon as you can if you enjoy a Christmas-oriented thriller.

The main set piece is in an LAX terminal on Christmas Eve, with ‘Eggsy’ from the ‘Kingsman’ series (Taron Everton) and Jason Bateman in a totally unexpected, I gotta say, quite fantastic role.

Frankly – it’s just damn good as thrillers go.

I particularly love the use of ‘Chekov’s Gun’ in this movie.

This is one of those movies that is a nice surprise; you might even call it an early Christmas gift: for that hard-to-satisfy person like myself, who usually has a movie’s plot points before it’s even half-way over (or what’s in the present under the tree just by shaking it a little), this very pleasantly, delightfully keeps you guessing until the end.

In cinema, a tight edit of a movie should only give you scenes that inform the motives, advances the plot; all killer, no filler. In a good movie, they’ll show, not tell, and allow you to connect the dots. While there are definitely points of expositions for the sake of advancing the plot, this one has some particularly clever moments I, merrily, didn’t see coming. Made my heart grow three sizes this… morning… that a film like this would trust the audience and give us moments of surprise plot points that were earned.

It’s Christmas time. C’mon. I had to.

Or maybe I just really liked the premise? My knowledge of the inner working of airports and protocols are limited, so there was an extra level of mystery of how situations were going to play out within the confines of the Masterpiece Theater that is the T.S.A.

Simply: I really enjoyed it. I love Bateman. I’m also a big fan of Egerton’s work, so maybe I’m biased. If you enjoy ‘Die Hard’ every Christmas season like I do (and I’ll die hard on this hill that it is a Christmas movie), this one will get added to the Christmas movie rotation with the adults.

Jake agrees.

…and if you’re up for sharing your Netflix account, I’m suspect I’m gonna need one soon.

Hit me up.
